motorcycling

In 2013, I bought my first motorcycle—a 2013 Yamaha Virago XV250. At 250 CCs, it's a small motorcycle, but it's really easy to ride and work on.

I have acquired a nice set of tools and have spent countless hours pouring through the service manual and online forums to do all maintenance myself.

I tinker a bit with minor customizations and custom DIY tools and gear. I also wired up my LED turn signals with a custom-built LED flasher.

Most of my riding consists of commuting, but I also take trips from time to time—like my 2000+ mile trip to Texas and back in 2015.

May 2015: We went to Louisville, KY over Memorial Day weekend, also in celebration of my birthday! View the gallery.

March 2015: We celebrated (early) our 5th anniversary with a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico. View the gallery.

September 2014: We went to Germany and visited both Berlin and Munich just days before Oktoberfest was in full swing. View the gallery.

July 2013: We went to Athens, Greece on our first big trip since our honeymoon in 2010. View the gallery.

I tend to take a lot of pictures when working on my motorcycle and, of course, when Gillian and I travel anywhere.

teaching
programming

From 2005 to 2015, I was a Teaching Assistant for William H. Sterner in the University of Chicago Computer Science department for two courses: Multimedia Programming as an Interdisciplinary Art and Introduction to Programming for the World Wide Web. Bill takes a different approach to teaching students programming, including discussions and reading meant to explore our understanding of the technologies we use and the impact they have on our thinking, relationships, and behaviors.

From 2007 to 2015, I was a System Administrator and Data Systems Analyst at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. During this time, I gained experience with several server architectures and databases and programmed extensively with Javascript, Python, PHP, and Perl, as well as some C/C++, Objective-C (iOS programming), and Java.

I have also written a few iOS applications, some of which I have released publicly. FontLibrary allows developers to evaluate their chosen font styles on the device. MPG Lite will track fuel economy every time the user fills up her gas tank. Simply BMI calculates and logs the user's body mass index number and reports daily calorie suggestions. WortHack balances the water and mash temperatures and quantities for home-brewed beer.
